4 Kids Celebrates Music

PITTSBURGH (08/25/2004) - On August 25, groups of 4 Kids toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged summer campers participated in a special event. Local experts in using cultural music with children, Azizi and Tazi Powell, visited our Braddock Avenue location.

The Powells, who are a mother and daughter team, brought a wide variety of instruments with which the children experimented. In addition, they led the children through a number of songs, including some with callbacks and related dances.

Ms. Powell gave a brief history of each instrument, and demonstrated how it is used and the sound it makes. Small groups of children came to the front of the group to play as the rest of the children sang and clapped along.

Following the program, the children were given the opportunity to explore and experiment with the instruments.

4 Kids welcomes events such as this in order to expose children to new and different ideas and materials. Furthermore, it gives each child an opportunity for hands-on experiences that promote learning and problem solving.
